Hover Craft, Colored Pencil on Bristol Board Mounted on Cradle Board, 10”Hx10”Wx1.5”D, N. Baur Dillen
About 20 years ago I started a small series of painting that dealt with the boat. It has always lived in the back of my mind. This past year I returned to this iconic image.
Hover Craft, part of my Boat Icon Series, is a small colored pencil drawing on Bristol Board mounted on cradle board. A boat moves within a dry, barren space. Inner origami-like panels unfold revealing a spinal column with radiating branches. Clouds float throughout.
To me the “boat” icon represents freedom, the soul, an individual’s journey of self-discovery, our relationship to nature, the human vessel, security, exploration, and transformation.
Living on the Indian River in Florida with the Space Program forty-five miles away, an inverted boat also represents a rocket and all its associations. I use an aerial view of a row-boat because it has a bound human form allowing me to play with its inner and outer spaces and meanings.
Hover Craft is my entry into this year’s National Association of Women Artist 136th Annual juried exhibit open to Signature members only. Over $13,000 in awards are available. Exhibition opens Friday, June 6, 2025; Gallery Hours Tuesday - Sunday, 12-6 pm

Want to help create a multi-disciplinary and experiential arts center for the Space Coast within the next five years? The fund was officially announced at the Community Foundations 40th Anniversary event on December 7, 2021. With the loss of the Foosaner Art Museum and Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts, there is an opportunity to create something new for all. We invite you to imagine with us and expand the arts on the Space Coast. Contact the CFB at (321) 752-5505, or visit the Exploration Arts! Fund to make a donation of any amount!
