OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER BRING COOLER WEATHER... Boy, are we ready!
With Labor Day comes subtle signs of approaching fall. The color of the sky turns a little more turquoise, winds pick up, rainy season starts, and the water level along the Indian River rises. Living along the shores of Florida, we also have the dread of possible hurricanes. If we are lucky enough to get through to November without one, then cooler weather is not be far away.
Bluescape is a painting I created a couple years ago that suggests cooler times along with ambiguity and a sense of wonder.

October 8 - November 14, 2026
My latest charcoal drawing, Those That Rose was selected for "Strange Weather," the show currently on display at the Art Center Sarasota. According to their website, "The exhibition celebrates the surreal and invited artists that explore worlds where reality bends, logic dissolves, and the unexpected becomes possible." We were encouraged to..."interpret “weather” as environmental, emotional, or psychological, capturing moments when reality shifts, logic bends, and the familiar turns strange. The theme "Strange Weather" also serves as a metaphor for moments of transformation, uncertainty, and the uncanny rather than literal atmospheric conditions.
Inspired by a photo I took while on a trip to northwest Washington and Vancouver Island, Canada, I imagined personalities struggling to escape or maybe taking shelter in the tree's rootball. I also felt the wind's energy stirring and an uneasy pulse throughout the forest.
The exhibit Strange Weather opened on Thursday, October 8 and will remain on display through November 14. Other activities related to the exhibit are scheduled like a gallery talk. Go to the website to see what and when they are available.

August 26 – October 23, 2026
My oil painting, Over the Hill and Far Away, is in the "Line by Line" exhibit and continues through the middle of October. With this link, you can see the 53 pieces in the exhibit without going to the gallery. Make sure to move the cursor side to side. I was impressed with the variety and the national scope.
I have always enjoyed developing compositions using artist, Paul Klee 's idea of "taking a walk with a line. Over the Hill and Far Away and Bluescape above were created with this in mind.

In my travels I'm always taking photos of industrial structures, abandoned buildings and urban landscapes. I use these photos as reference for the abstract landscapes I paint back in my studio.
Coming from a graphic design background, my work is more graphic and hard-edged than painterly.
Mike is a shock artist and realistic sculptor. Many of his bronze sculptures merge human figures and industrial machines.
I paint for the joy it brings me and with the hope it may bring delight to the viewer. My artistic style celebrates nature. I focus on capturing the essence a moment in time and place through intuitive mark making, not just drawing, which is why I work in pastels. As an artist I strive to seize the light and capture it in my paintings. (See image below.)

I wanted to share the article written by Ken Datzman for the Brevard Business News and take this opportunity to thank the Community Foundation for all their hard work in helping make this happen. The staff worked throughout the year updating the art teachers about the scholarship, reviewing the applications, making sure the teachers' preferred classes were available, and following up with the teachers to organize an exhibit of their work and host the event.
The article Ken wrote, "Educators honored at Nancy Baur Dillen Art Teacher Scholarship event at the CAPE Center in Cape Canaveral, partners with Community Foundation" can be found on pages 13 and 21 in the Vol. 44 No.41 October 12, 2026 issue (https://brevardbusinessnews.com/archives/2026-articles/#). FYI... when you go to the archived article, select the October issue and use the right and left arrows to scroll through to pages to 13 and 21.
Having attended and taught at Arrowmont almost two-dozen times, I know how important going there was for my career as an art professor at Eastern Florida State College and my development as a professional artist.
Now the art teachers are inspired and ready to share all they learned. The friends they made and the experiences they had will make them better teachers and artists.
