DILLENART SPECIAL NEWS

AUGUST & SEPTEMBER: HOT, HOT MONTHS... Time for Color!

Color, line, shape, and movement abound in my newest "memory" painting, Echoes from an Inner Field. My creative journey starts with a quick contour line drawing of a part of a tree, then a branch, bush, person, object or skyline changing as my inner music directs the flow of the mark. At some point I stop, evaluate the composition and develope hidden forms and spaces by edge shading the positive or negative shapes to add ambiguity. This takes me further into a new subliminal space. The journey continues when I transfer the composition onto canvas. With vine charcoal, my hand moves across the surface developing the hidden story. Once layers of oil paint are added, rich, unexpected colors explode into a desultory symphony vibrating throughout the composition adding to the viewer's journey of discovery.

LINE BY LINE:

August 26 – October 23, 2026

Imaginary landscapes continue with my oil painting, Over the Hill and Far Away, which was selected for inclusion in a theme show organized by the Gainesville Fine Arts Association for their 5th Biennial National Juried Exhibition. The idea behind the exhibition is that a line is the most basic visual element. Artist, Paul Klee was known for using a dot to take a walk to develop his imaginary compositions. I have used his ideas in my teaching and in my own work as seen in the painting above, Echos of an Inner Field. Lines, dots, and dashes define shapes, implied movement, and creates structure. But, beyond the visual arts, a line separates, connects, measures and marks. Over the Hill and Far Away does all of those things plus adds the elements of rich, unexpected colors, textures, and spaces. I hope you enjoy looking at the painting and "taking your walk through its visual terrains."

      KELLY BERNING: COMMON THREADS

Kelly Berning won the best of show award in the Annual All Florida Juried Competition in June. Along with the prize she also is given a solo show for her outstanding work.

      Kelly's Artist Statement
My ceramic work explores memory, transformation, time, and the emotional landscapes that shape human experience, often through themes of ritual, hope, and imagination. Through figurative sculpture and functional forms, I create objects that invite reflection, tell stories, and carry symbolic intention. Influenced by surrealism and psychological storytelling, my work often occupies a dreamlike space between memory and imagination, where personal experience becomes universal.
Across several interconnected bodies of work, I investigate the ways identity is formed through relationships, ritual, nature, and change. Many figurative sculptures draw from my experiences as both a woman and a mother, exploring the joys, vulnerabilities, and quiet complexities of raising children in a world that often feels divided and uncertain. These figures invite viewers to reconnect with the wonder and curiosity of childhood while reflecting on growth, protection, resilience, and the ways our identities continue to evolve throughout our lives.
